Prop Firm Risk Management

Forex prop firm rules checklist

A prop account can have good opportunities and still be lost through a rule you did not fully understand. Use this checklist before trading a challenge or funded account, then review it whenever the firm changes its terms.

Start with the firm's current written rules

This checklist is an organization tool, not the contract. Rules vary across firms, account types, and even programs from the same firm. Confirm every item against the current agreement, dashboard, and support documentation before you trade.

Account Setup Sheet

Write these rules down before the first trade

Rule AreaWhat to recordWhy it matters
Account basicsFirm, program, account size, platform, base currency, evaluation or funded status.Stops different accounts from being mixed in one review.
Daily-loss limitDollar or percentage limit, reset time, and whether it uses balance, equity, or both.A live loss can violate a daily limit before a trade closes.
Maximum drawdownLimit, trailing or static calculation, high-water mark, and whether it follows balance or equity. The calculation method changes the amount of usable room.
Profit target and consistencyTarget, minimum trading days, consistency rule, payout requirements, and deadline if any.A strong day may still create a later consistency issue.
News and holding rulesRestricted releases, blackout windows, overnight or weekend rules, and exceptions.A correct market view can still be a rule violation.
Trading limitsApproved symbols, lot or contract limits, EAs, copy trading, hedging, and prohibited methods.Platform access does not guarantee every approach is permitted.
Your risk planRisk per trade, maximum total open risk, maximum trades per day, and personal stop-for-the-day level.Your limits should leave room inside the firm's limits.

The three drawdown questions that cannot stay vague

1. Is the limit static or trailing? A static limit remains at a set level. A trailing limit can move as the account reaches new high-water marks. The firm's specific calculation controls.

2. Does it use balance, equity, or both? Open positions can affect equity before they affect closed balance. That distinction matters when holding a trade through volatility.

3. When does the daily rule reset? Record the provider's stated time zone and reset time. A trader who assumes midnight local time can be wrong.

Build a personal buffer, not a plan that touches the limit

A prop firm's maximum loss is a hard boundary, not a recommended trade-risk amount. Set personal limits that leave a buffer for spread changes, slippage, correlated positions, and normal variance.

For example, a trader may choose a smaller maximum risk per trade and a lower personal stop-for-the-day level than the firm permits. The right number depends on the account's rules, trade frequency, and strategy; the important point is deciding before emotion enters the session.

Turn the checklist into a daily routine

  1. Before the session: Check balance, equity, remaining daily-loss room, open exposure, and the economic calendar.
  2. Before each trade: Confirm the setup, stop, position size, total correlated risk, and any news or holding restriction.
  3. After the session: Compare the result with the plan and tag any repeatable mistake or rule-pressure moment.
  4. Weekly: Review whether the account was traded within personal limits, not merely whether it avoided a breach.
