How to track forex account growth without ignoring risk

A growing balance can be encouraging, but it is not the whole account story. A useful review separates money added to the account from trading results, compares balance with equity, and asks whether the growth came with risk that still fits the plan.

Account Growth Is Context

A bigger account is not automatically a stronger process

Account value can change because of deposits, withdrawals, credits, realized P&L, commissions, swaps, and open positions. Review those movements separately so a funding decision is not confused with trading performance and a temporary equity move is not confused with a permanent result.

Track the account in four layers

LayerWhat it showsWhy it matters
Cash activityDeposits, withdrawals, credits, and other non-trading account movementsKeeps account funding separate from trading performance.
BalanceClosed results and completed account activityShows the settled account value after trades are closed.
EquityBalance plus unrealized open-position P&LShows live pressure or opportunity while positions remain open.
Risk qualityDrawdown, planned risk, open exposure, and rule-followingShows whether the path to the result stayed inside the process.

Do not count deposits as trading progress

Adding money to a live account may be the right decision, but it does not demonstrate that the strategy produced the same increase. Record deposits and withdrawals as account activity, then review trading P&L separately.

The same discipline applies to a prop account. A larger allocation, payout, reset, credit, or rule change can affect the account picture without saying anything about whether the last group of trades followed the plan.

Simple review question

What changed because of funds added or removed, what changed because of closed trading results, and what is still exposed through open equity risk?

Use equity to avoid a false sense of safety

Balance only changes when positions close or account activity posts. Equity moves with open positions. An account can show a stable balance while open trades carry a meaningful unrealized loss, correlated exposure, or a drawdown that matters to a broker or prop-firm rule.

That does not make every open loss a problem. It means the account review should include the total risk at the stop, current equity behavior, and the events that could affect the positions before calling the account healthy.

Measure the quality of growth

A healthier question

Did the account change while risk per trade, total exposure, and drawdown remained inside the written plan?

A weaker question

How quickly can the account get back to a previous level? That framing can encourage oversizing and revenge trading.

Review the source

Which strategy, pair, session, and behavior produced the result? A number without context is difficult to repeat or improve.

Review the path

Did the account take avoidable heat, drift from the risk rule, or depend on one oversized outcome?

A practical weekly account check

  1. Confirm the starting and ending balance, current equity, and any deposits or withdrawals.
  2. Review realized P&L and account activity without combining them into one unexplained figure.
  3. Check current and maximum drawdown, plus remaining daily or total loss room where applicable.
  4. Review total open risk and correlated positions before adding a new trade.
  5. Compare the result with setup quality, execution, and repeated mistake tags.
  6. Choose one process adjustment only if the evidence supports it.

Keep account growth reviewable

TradingForexForProfit keeps accounts, account activity, planned trades, open positions, closed results, drawdown context, performance, and weekly review connected. That makes it easier to see what actually changed and whether the risk was worth the result.

Frequently asked questions

Should I track account growth by percentage or dollars?

Both can be useful. Dollar changes show the account movement, while percentage changes make it easier to compare periods and account sizes. Always identify whether the change includes deposits, withdrawals, or only trading results.

Can a profitable week still be risky?

Yes. A profitable week can still involve excessive size, a large equity drawdown, concentrated exposure, or rule-breaking. Review the risk path as well as the final result.

Why should I track swaps and commissions?

Trading costs affect realized results. Keeping them visible helps prevent a strategy from looking stronger on a gross basis than it is after actual account costs.
