Platforms And Imports

How to import MT4 trade history into a forex journal

Historical MT4 trades can be useful evidence, but they should not stay trapped in a broker statement. Importing closed transactions gives you a starting point for reviewing risk, execution, pair behavior, and the process behind the result.

Start with the right MT4 history

Open the account history for the specific live, demo, or prop account you want to review. Set a custom period that matches the journal account. Mixing accounts, currencies, or unrelated time periods makes the later performance review much less useful.

MT4 export labels vary by broker and terminal build. Look for an account-history action such as saving or exporting a report, then use a spreadsheet-friendly file when available. If the terminal only produces an HTML report, open it in a spreadsheet and save a clean CSV copy before importing.

Import Checklist

Prepare an MT4 closed-trade CSV

1. Keep completed trades. The useful rows are completed buy and sell transactions with a closing time and realized result. Pending orders, cancelled orders, and open positions do not represent a finished journal outcome.

2. Keep meaningful trade fields. A helpful export includes symbol, direction, lot size, open price, close price, close time, and net profit. Commission and swap can be retained where the statement provides them.

3. Do not force deposits into trade P&L. MT4 history may contain balance rows for deposits, withdrawals, credits, swaps, or fees. Those are account activity, not winning or losing trades. Keeping that distinction prevents a ledger change from being mistaken for strategy performance.

4. Use a CSV, not a screenshot. The importer needs structured rows and headers. Before upload, open the file once in a spreadsheet to confirm that columns did not merge and decimal values are still numeric.

Preview before you import

Choose the target trading account and select MT4 Closed Transactions as the source. Preview first. A good preview lets you confirm the trade count, symbol mapping, dates, prices, and P&L before anything reaches the journal.

The import flow checks for matching rows so a repeated upload does not intentionally duplicate the same closed trade. If the preview is wrong, stop there and correct the source file instead of importing a questionable dataset.

What an import can and cannot tell you

A broker export captures what happened. It may not capture your original setup, invalidation, news context, or reason for entry. Use imported data to establish the historical record, then add plans, notes, strategy context, and mistake tags to the trades you want to learn from most.
