How to calculate forex margin
Margin estimates whether the broker can support a position. Calculate it after defining risk and position size, then verify it in the broker order ticket before placing the trade.
The basic margin formula
When the position value and broker requirement are expressed in the same currency, the simple estimate is:
If the broker describes the requirement as leverage instead, the equivalent estimate is:
For example, a 2% margin requirement is the same as 50:1 leverage for that instrument. Broker requirements can differ by pair, account type, volatility conditions, and jurisdiction, so treat this as an estimate rather than an order-ticket substitute.
Worked Example
Estimate margin for an EURUSD position
Assume a USD account, EURUSD at 1.1000, and a trade size of 0.10 standard lots. One standard lot represents 100,000 EUR, so 0.10 lots represents 10,000 EUR. At 1.1000, the notional value is approximately $11,000.
Or, using the equivalent 50:1 ratio:
This tells you about broker capacity. It does not tell you whether 0.10 lots is an appropriate trade size. That requires a stop loss and a defined account-risk limit.
How to calculate free margin
A common platform calculation is:
If account equity is $5,000 and the open position uses $220 in margin, free margin is about $4,780 before considering other positions. If the trade loses value, equity falls and free margin can shrink even though the original margin requirement has not changed.
Some platforms also show a margin level, commonly calculated from equity divided by used margin. The display and liquidation thresholds are broker-specific, so use your broker documentation and order ticket as the source of truth.
Why cross pairs need an extra check
When the pair's notional currency differs from the account currency, the platform may convert the requirement using a live exchange rate. GBPJPY in a USD account, for example, can require a conversion through USDJPY or another rate. That is why a hand calculation is useful for understanding, but a broker order ticket is essential before entry.
Margin requirements can also change around volatile conditions or differ for metals, indices, and CFDs. Never copy a requirement from another pair or an old screenshot.
Use margin after, not before, risk planning
The wrong workflow is: “How much margin do I have, and how large a trade can I open?” That can produce maximum exposure with no defined loss boundary.
The stronger workflow is: choose the technical stop, set the maximum account loss, calculate position size, and then verify that the margin is available. Read what forex margin means and how to use a position size calculator for the complete sequence.
