Journal And Review
Forex trading journal sample: from plan to review
The value of a trading journal is clearer when you can see what belongs in it. This sample trade journal shows how one trade can move from an idea to an open position, a completed result, and a useful weekly review.
A journal should follow the life of the trade
A broker statement can show entry, exit, and profit or loss. It usually cannot tell you why the trade was taken, whether the risk was planned, or whether the actual execution matched the original idea. A completed forex journal entry keeps that decision context visible.
The examples below use fictional numbers for education only. They are not trade recommendations or evidence of a strategy's expected results. Their purpose is to show the questions a trader can answer at each stage.
Example 1
Planned trade: write the idea before the entry
This example records the trade while it is still only a plan. The outcome is unknown, which is exactly why risk and invalidation should be defined now.
- Account context
- $5,000 account equity
- Pair and direction
- EURUSD buy
- Entry, stop, target
- 1.0800 / 1.0775 / 1.0850
- Planned risk
- 0.5% or $25 maximum loss
- Setup and timing
- London-session continuation
- Trader check-in
- Calm; confidence 3 of 5
Example 2
Open trade: capture the actual fill and management
What changed?
The trade filled at 1.0802 instead of 1.0800. The small difference is recorded, not ignored, because repeated entry drift can matter over a larger sample.
Was risk still valid?
The calculated position size kept the maximum planned loss near $25. No additional correlated position was added while this trade was open.
What is the management rule?
The stop and target remain in place unless a pre-defined rule calls for a change. Management is not based on discomfort alone.
What can support review later?
Attach a setup screenshot and a short note if market conditions change. This gives the later review context that a statement cannot provide.
Example 3
Closed trade: record the outcome without rewriting the plan
| Item | Illustrative record | Review question |
|---|---|---|
| Exit | Target reached near 1.0850 | Did the actual exit follow the written plan? |
| Result | Realized P&L recorded with any costs | What was the net result, not just the gross result? |
| Execution | No early exit and no unplanned size change | Was the process followed even when price moved against the trade? |
| Lesson | The entry was slightly late but risk stayed controlled | Is this a one-off detail or a recurring mistake tag? |
A useful conclusion is not simply “winner” or “loser.” It identifies whether the setup, position size, execution, and management were acceptable. That distinction makes a journal usable during both winning and losing periods.
Example 4
Weekly review: turn several trades into one focused adjustment
Sample observation: Four planned trades were recorded. Risk limits were respected, but two entries were taken before the checklist confirmation. Both had lower setup-quality scores than the trades that waited for confirmation.
One adjustment for next week: Do not change strategy, size, session, and target all at once. Require the checklist confirmation before entering the same setup for the next five qualified opportunities.
This is the point of a weekly review: find a specific process pattern and make one measurable change, rather than react emotionally to a single trade.
