Forex lot size calculator

Calculate a risk-based forex lot size from your account balance, planned risk, stop loss distance, and pip value. Start with the amount you can afford to risk, then let the trade size adjust to the chart.

Calculate your forex lot size

Enter the values from your trade plan. The calculator uses them to estimate a position size that stays inside your planned dollar risk.

What is this? Confirm this for the pair and your account currency before entry.

How the lot size calculation works

Step 1: Account balance multiplied by risk percentage equals the planned dollar risk.

Step 2: Planned dollar risk divided by stop loss pips and pip value per lot equals the estimated lot size.

This is why the trade size comes after the technical stop decision, not before it. A wider stop should reduce the lot size if the planned dollar risk stays the same.

Your calculated lot size

Risk Amount
$100.00
Lot Size
0.40
Standard lots
Dollars Per Pip
$4.00

This output is only as good as the stop loss distance and pip value you enter. The trade idea still needs to fit the chart, your broader risk plan, and any prop-firm or daily drawdown rules you follow.

Why calculate lot size before entry?

Most sizing mistakes happen when traders choose a lot size first and then try to force the stop loss around it.

A better workflow is account risk, then stop loss, then position size. That is how risk gets enforced before the trade is opened.

Forex lot size calculator FAQs

How do you calculate forex lot size?

First calculate the dollar amount you intend to risk. Then divide it by the stop distance in pips and the pip value for one standard lot. The calculator performs this process for you.

Why does the stop loss change the lot size?

A wider stop exposes more pips to loss. Keeping the planned dollar risk fixed means the position size needs to be smaller. A tighter stop has the opposite effect.

Is pip value the same for every pair?

No. Pip value depends on the pair, lot size, account currency, and conversion rate. JPY pairs also use a different pip convention. Confirm the applicable pip value instead of assuming it is always $10.
