Japan’s yen marched firmly higher, reversing a month of declines that followed a round of buying supported by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, raising the prospect of further intervention into the currency market. The yen’s two-day advance takes it around 156.3 against the U.S. dollar, a level last held on a closing basis in early May, as traders raised bets on a Bank of Japan rate hike later this month in Tokyo. Japan’s Ministry of Finance has spent billions propping up the yen this year, including a record $53 billion in late July when it joined forces with the U.S. Treasury Department for the first time since 1998 to arrest the currency’s yearslong slide.
